Steel orders are decreasing, and some delivery dates are being pushed back or canceled. Over 10 million short tons per year of flat rolled steel production has been taken offline in the last two months, with the majority taken down by integrated steelmakers.
 


Permanently shuttered iron and steelmaking operations at Great Lakes Works in Michigan

Idled a total of five blast furnaces at Gary Works in Indiana, Granite City Works, just north of St. Louis, and Mon Valley Works in Pennsylvania.

Reduced operating levels at No. 3 blast furnace and finishing operations at Mon Valley Irvin plant.

Idled production at Lorain OH and Lone Star TX oil and gas tubular operations, Hughes Springs TX coupling, and Keetac iron ore in Minnesota.

Reduced production at Minntac mine also in Minnesota.

Installation continues on a new 1.6 million short ton/year electric arc furnace (EAF) at Fairfield Works Tubular Operations in Alabama with completion expected this year.

According to steel analysts, U.S. Steel has now idled about 50% of its 17 million tons of flat rolled steel capacity.


Idled a total of five blast furnaces at the Indiana Harbor West integrated flat-rolled steel mill near Chicago, the Cleveland integrated steel-making facility, the Dofasco flat-rolled mill in Hamilton, Ontario, and Burns Harbor in Northwest Indiana, its second largest U.S. facility.


Indefinitely idled the 2.2 million short ton/year blast furnace at AK Steel Dearborn Works in Michigan in March, then announced the permanent shut down of the hot strip mill, annealing, and tempering operations effective July 5. Slab rolling will move to Middletown OH.

Temporarily idleoperations at Northshore Mining in Minnesota and Tilden Mine in Michigan. Northshore is scheduled to restart in August and Tilden in July.

Paused construction at the new HBI plant in Toledo OH.


Suspended melting and rolling operations at the Jackson MI, Monroe MI, and Fort Smith AR special steel operations, which include three electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills. However, a week later Fort Smith was restarted.

Idled the melt shop was at the Cartersville GA merchant bar EAF mill.

The North Carolina-based steelmaker posted a first quarter profit of $20.3 million, down by 96% from the $501.8 million it made in the first quarter of 2019.

Restarted its Louisiana direct reduced iron (DRI) plant on April 25, three weeks after idling it.

The company’s Trinidad and Tobago DRI plant, which closed March 30, remains offline.

In addition, Nucor is cutting 2020 capital expenditures by a quarter to $1.5 billion, affecting the expansion of its hot band mill and new plate mill in Kentucky.

Plans to operate its flat-rolled steel mills in Butler IN and Columbus MS at 80% utilization through May. Has enough demand to keep utilization rates at that level likely through June.

Delaying construction investments for its $1.9 billion flat rolled steel mill in Sinton TX until late 2020.


Curtailing much of its Pennsylvania tubular pipe production including idling its EAF billet mill in Koppel and its seamless pipe mill in Ambridge.

Idled its Brookfield OH threading plant and Blytheville AR welded pipe mill and reduced the workforce at its Baytown TX threading plant and Hickman AR welded pipe plant.

Idled the 1.65mn st/yr electric arc furnace at Mingo Junction OH for four weeks.
